I thought it was just dirt!
That black shadow on the driveway is a combination of bacteria and dirt.
Gloeocapsa magma to be exact.
Here we see years of growth on this West End driveway. Stand back from your screen to really notice the difference.
Working from the building towards the road, the contrast between clean and bacteria-infested is obvious. It always amazes Chris and Leonie how the colours are refreshed after a driveway has been Softwashed.

It's Not Dirt & It's Not Mould
Mould grows in dark, damp areas and does not rely on sunlight to survive. Gloeocapsa magma (Gleo) is the opposite. However, it develops a thick, black outer coating to protect itself from the sun's UV rays when out of water. Hence, why a black blanket is most commonly seen on footpaths, roofs, and driveways.
We walk on our driveway and paths every day as we lead our busy lives without thinking about the fact that traces of bacteria are being walked into our homes and onto our tiles and carpet, as it adheres to the soles of our shoes or bare feet. Yuk!
Gently Does It
Pre-treated for Gleo and grease with our Softwash solution which includes a fungicide and environmentally friendly degreaser, your driveway will beam with renewed colour and brightness. A final high-pressure clean using one of our two rotor washers - either Big Boris or Svetlana, "Svetsy" depending on the size of your driveway - is optional but not necessary in most cases.
A common misconception is that high-pressure cleaning causes damage to driveway surfaces. In fact, Gleo has already done the damage. It encapsulates (surrounds) individual grains within the driveway material, dislodges it, but holds it in place as a result of the blanketing growth habit of Gloeocapsa magma. The pressure cleaner just removes the Gleo and the free grains of sand and/or pebbles, and then looks like the culprit. However, pressure cleaners and paint are a different story and the reason why Softwash was developed.
12 Months Strong!
In August 2020, we tackled this huge Kirwan driveway seen behind this text that was suffocating under a mass of bacteria. It was so dense that on removal, it created inch thick puddles in the rinsing water. A broom was needed to help move it along. Today we still jump for joy as we continue to see this clean driveway stand out from the crowd whenever we drive past :-) which is evidence of why we guarantee removal for 12 months.
The elderly homeowners were stoked when we completed their clean and their pet doggo seemed to demonstrate this by settling upside-down on the unsullied surface straight after. Bliss :-) It always astounds us as to the amount of colour that returns following a clean. Totally satisfying!

1. Where a surface is fragile, we will not high-pressure clean, unless we have been asked to.
2. Softwash will clean so well that pre-existing hard surface damage underneath the bacteria will appear more prominent.
3. Rust, grease, and oil stains, especially if heavy and/or old, will generally not be completely removed by anything, including Softwash, as it has become embedded in the material.
4. Grease and Oil: Our degreaser does pull up a lot of what is on the surface resulting in a lightened stain area. However, the cleaned area surrounding it will make it seem untouched.
